Thursday, November 10, 2011- Happy Birthday Emma!

"The birth mother was born and raised in Seoul. Her father is a calligraphy teacher. Her parents were divorced when she was little. She was cut off from her father and she lived with her mother. When her mother got a job in another city, she moved in with her grandparents. When she was a junior in high school, she lost interest in studying and she quit school. She left home and started living alone. She gave birth to a son from another boyfriend in February 2004, and he us adopted into an American home (Not Samuel).

In January 2006, she first came to know the birth father of this child while playing internet games and they started going out. At her 5th month, she realized her pregnancy. She told it to him and he evaded his responsibilities. In November 2006, she entered a shelter for unmarried affiliates of SWS (our agency in Korea). She delivered this child during her stay at the shelter, nine weeks earlier than planned. The birth parenst decided on adoption since they were both socially and financially unable to raise the child. The birth moth named the girl Kim Byul- "byul" which means "star" because she wants her baby to be a shining star in the world."

This is the only account we have of Emma's birth. There were not any balloons or flowers. No banners welcoming this baby girl into the world. Family members were not anxiously waiting the arrival of a new bundle of joy. There was a young mother, who had already given birth to one child, who gave birth in a shelter and had to make the choice to give away her little girl for a better future. Emma is a shining star! She lights up our life and the lives of those who know her. I am still having trouble processing that she is 5 years old! She is smart, funny, and caring. She keeps us laughing! I was thinking last night of the many funny things she has been doing the past few weeks. A few weeks ago the kids were at the table and Emma was matching shadows on the wall with her hands singing the "Nationwide is on your side" comercial. A few months ago we were out of town and her and Chloe were sleeping together. When they woke up in the morning Chloe was touching her and we heard her say, "And this is why I do not like sleeping with you!" The other day Jeremy got onto Chloe about something and Emma says, "Welcome to my life, dad!" She talks so grown up and she keeps up lauging. I could go on and on about this precious girl that is in our life but I need to be going. We are truly blessed to be called "mommy" and "daddy" by this amazing little girl. We are so proud of her and we are so blessed that she has already asked Jesus into her heart. HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMMA BYUL, OUR LITTLE STAR!
