We had a great weekend! It was kind of busy, but that was okay. I keep getting confused to what day it is because since Friday my routine has been off. Yesterday felt like Friday because of the field trip and today feels like Monday since I ran all of my errands today.
My plans for Friday did not go exactly as planned and I ended up being home most of the day. It worked out that I was home because Jeremy lost an important set of keys so I spend most of Friday cleaning every square inch of our apartment trying to find them. He eventually found them at school. I however, did find lots of other missing items, so it was still worth the extreme cleaning. One important item found was Chloe's DSI. It has been missing for months! We were really hoping to find it before our trip to TN, so it was great to finally find it.
On Saturday Emma had a birthday party for one of her friends at the bowling alley. Before we left Samuel's friend that moved away a few weeks called and asked if he could come over that afternoon. It was so good to hear from this friend and I am excited that the relationship with this friend's mom can also continue. Samuel was not able to go since we were meeting up with our family later and he was pretty bummed. So, I let him go with us to the party. We get to the party and my heart was so happy to see all of Emma's friends squeal and run to hug Emma. Emma is my least social out of the three, but the most sensitive if she doesn't have someone to play with at school. Before this school year, she usually only talked about one or two girls and struggled if those two girls were playing with someone else at recess or before school. So, to see this little group of girls just made me happy to see Emma so happy. There was another boy at the party who was Samuel's age so it actually worked out that Samuel went with me. Most of the parents stayed for the party and I was able to connect with several other moms. One mom and I exchanged numbers and it was nice to be making connections.
Saturday afternoon my parents came to the city and we met up with my brother, baby nephew, and my nephew Kraig and his girlfriend. I became Aunt Kimmy when I was in 7th grade when Kaleb came into this world. A few years later Kraig would join our family. Those two boys had all of us wrapped around their little finger. Over Thanksgiving I was looking through my mom's pictures and from the time Kaleb was born almost all of the pictures had one of these boys in the pictures, Wherever the picture was taken you could see a sweet little boy somewhere in the picture. They lived across the street from us and we were with them all the time. The summer after Kraig was born I would babysit for the boys and I still treasure that time spent with them. My senior year of high school they all moved back to TN and it about killed us. Fortunately, the next year I would join them and TN and was actually blessed to get a job at the daycare they were attending so I could see them every day. When Jeremy and I started dating he knew that part of dating me meant he would have to be okay with the fact that two little boys would be with us and be a part of our lives. There would be soccer games, birthday parties, programs, and anything else they were doing because I would not miss being apart of their life. Of course he was okay with that and he too loved them. Because of those two boys I never once doubted that I could love someone else's child as my own, because I love those boys (yes, I know they are now men) like my own. As they got older and we moved away I do not get to see them as often. We see Kaleb a few more times a year then Kraig, but the last few years I have only seen Kraig once a year. When I do get to see them I just enjoy every minute of it. So, we met up with them at Navy Pier to eat and then headed to the zoo to see the Zoo Lights. It was a little cold, but the lights were beautiful and it was nice to talk and get caught up on life. We are planning to get together when I am in TN over Christmas break, so I might actually get to see him twice this year :)!
Sunday started early because I had Peapod deliver my groceries Sunday morning before church. I knew our weekend was going to be crazy and I was not sure what times we would be home, but I did know that we would be home at 7:00 on Sunday morning. After church service the kids started working on homework and I took a wonderful nap. Jeremy was not feeling well so he also just rested the rest of the day.
Yesterday I went on a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry with Samuel's class. It takes a great deal of restraint, but I really try not to embarrass him around his friends. He did let me get one picture with him, but we had to slump down in the seat of the bus so nobody would see. He sat with me on the way to the field trip and I just could not stop admiring the young man he is growing into. I ended up with five boys in my group and we had a great time. I also cannot help but naturally going into teacher mode when I am in a situation with kids. The museum was so crowded and my natural instinct just took over. It did not hit me how much I was acting like a teacher until we were leaving the lunch room and I look behind me and my five boys are walking in a straight line behind me. I totally did not tell them to line up or anything! I guess they thought of me as a teacher. It makes me a little sad that I do not have a class this year. I love being with kids and noticing things I can do to help that child have the best experience. I got five very sweet thank you notes yesterday afternoon from five great 5th graders. On the way back to school from the field trip Samuel sat with one of his friends and I was okay with that. Watching him with his friends yesterday made my heart happy once again. The highlight of yesterday though, was after school Chloe's teacher caught me before we left and told me since our meeting Chloe has been wonderful! She has not got in trouble one time. She has had a great attitude and has been making good choices. After daddy got home we were telling him the good report and he asked Chloe what happened to help her. She said she thinks it's because people are praying for her. Heart melted <3!! Thank you for praying for Chloe!!
In honor of my years of teaching, I am posting a collage of pictures of different ornaments I have received from some of my students over the years. This is just a few of the ornaments I have gotten and even the ones that are not in the picture are so special to me. I am blessed to have had such wonderful students and their families cross paths in my life.
